What’s more absurd than an amusement park in the dead of winter in Upstate NY? Check out our December 2006 visit to Sylvan Beach Amusment Park!

Sylvan Beach is definitely worth a follow-up visit during the warmer months. The indoor ride, “Laff Land” with the bats painted onto the exterior, is still in operation during the summer months. It looked like they pulled much of the outer decor down for the winter. It’s essentially a spook house that you get to ride through. All of the original animatronic ghosts and ghouls are mostly intact. Some of the lights done work anymore when the car goes by and trips the sensors. It smells musty (like a dungeon-y basement) and has cobwebs hanging from the ceiling that sometimes brush by your face. It’s deliciously tacky and a must-do, particularly given your love of the absurb. 🙂

Take a peek at the photos I took of Sylvan Beach a few summers ago. They also have one of the few remaining Fascination parlors left in the US. Most of the machines in there are still operable (at least they were when I visited).
